One problem with Liftoff: Drone Racing is that it can cause motion sickness in susceptible players. The same can be said of the sound as well, which is limited almost entirely to the whirring of the drone’s motors. Liftoff: Drone Racing won’t win any presentation awards, though, as the visuals are pretty basic, doing just about the bare minimum to make things look good enough to not put players too far off. In terms of Liftoff: Drone Racing game modes, there’s a career mode that takes users through the history of drone racing, which is a nice touch as it provides a good background to the sport, and a couple of multiplayer race types to try online. The drone community is a full of creative minds and technological tinkerers. Even after hours of racing, it is not easy to be super comfortable with ACRO Mode and it’s likely something that most players will want to avoid. One of the reasons for that is the fact that the camera is fixed in a first-person perspective. While this gives the player the ability to perform faster turns and acrobatic moves, it is far more difficult to master. This gets rid of the controlling momentum with triggers and instead concentrates all of the controls on the two thumbsticks. Although it offers less overall control of the drone, this control scheme works well to get players used to how drones fly and how to move through different courses.
The thumbstick is then used to move up, down, and turn around corners. The first comes with a flying assist to ensure that the drone never crashes into the ground and works with the triggers operating the forward or backward motion. There are actually two control schemes available in the form of a standard approach and the ACRO Mode. Thankfully, Liftoff: Drone Racing does make some concessions for more casual players. No one will pick it up and instantly be able to start setting course records as might be the case in more traditional racing games. It’s a simulation game in the very truest sense, forcing users to put the effort in to improve and get faster.
For the most part, this is definitely a title that has been geared towards hardcore players. Players take control of fast and agile drones that they must then race through various courses in the hopes of getting first place.
